Dancer Development


BalletNext offers a limited number of positions in its NextGeneration program for promising, advanced dancers. It is the Company's method of imparting a type of training that's missed by many professional dancers.

Each person enrolled is taught personally by Michele Wiles. They're also under the wings of the more-senior Company members. It is a collegial group, knit together by shared work ethic and commitment as much as by technique and artistry. Each NextGen dancer is expected to take ownership of their own technique and approach to the art, to be responsible for advancing themselves and caring for their health.

Each dancer is exposed to intensive, 5-days-per-week, in-studio training in classical ballet technique, blended with BalletNext collaborations that may draw upon diverse aesthetics. Dancers are expected to take class consistently with the BalletNext company and to participate in the creation of new choreography as needed.

The NextGen program is about so much more than technique! It provides opportunities to collaborate with people who will push, press, explore, and expand the dancer's creative and professional potential… even when it's hard. Especially when it's hard.

Along the way, each person explores their own creative direction rather than learning the aesthetic of one company or school. They develop methods for discovering where they are drawn to go in dance. We believe that's important, not only for the art, but for the dancer's fulfillment and joy in the very real labor of it all.



Performance Opportunities

Dancers accepted into NextGeneration will have the opportunity to perform in choreographic exhibits, may join us on creative retreats, and typically are part of the BalletNext week-long Spring and Fall seasons in New York City.

The NextGeneration schedule is similar to academic quarters:

January – March

April – June

Application Process

Candidates may register to audition for the Fall 2017 program by May 26. Some candidates will be accepted to audition on June 3 in New York City.

Wait list? If you miss the registration deadline, our advice is to submit the form anyway for possible later consideration. The program does not, however, keep a formal wait list.

Michele Wiles

Founder and Artistic Director of BalletNext, former Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre. Her Ushuaia to music by Heinrich Biber marked her formal choreographic debut in 2015.

Jay Donn

Founder of the Brooklyn dance style known as Flexing and creator of the sub-style, “Punchlines.” Featured in televised performances and many videos, he has toured worldwide.

Jesus Pastor

Artistic Director of Human Dance Project. Former Principal Dancer at Compañia Victor Ullate, Senior Soloist at English National Ballet, Soloist at American Ballet Theatre. 

Marjorie Liebert

Movement therapist and ballet mistress, has coached injured dancers incl. Misty Copeland. Chosen by Boris Kniaseff to carry on his barre-à-terre, she helps dancers find their true placement.

If there are openings, BalletNext may respond to the email address you provide below. Be prepared with the following:

  • $50 application & audition fee — we will provide a link to a secure form to pay online.
  • If your registration is approved provisionally, you will be invited to an audition scheduled for June 3 in New York City.
  • Photographs — a head shot and one to four (1–4) full-body photographs.
  • Education — a list with dates of any educational institutions, academies, internships, and significant workshops you've attended and the certifications, positions, or degrees you attained.
  • Performance — a list with dates and locations of your dance performances and roles in public productions.
  • Video — links to any online videos of your relevant dance performances/work examples (private or public, studio or stage).
  • Personal statement — use a page or two to tell us about your interests and what you hope to gain from this program.
